Milad Tower stacked against a wall of snow, with nothing else in the frame but hard blue sky. The concrete shaft runs straight up the centre, the pod flares out in a diagrid of glass and steel, and the spire carries on past the top of the mountains. The Alborz fills the entire lower two-thirds — bare rock, deep drifts and blue shadow.

The tower stands 435 metres to the tip and was finished in 2007, to a design by Mohammad Reza Hafezi begun more than a decade earlier. Its shaft is octagonal, a plan drawn from Persian building geometry. The mountains behind it are the Tochal massif, which rises to nearly 4,000 metres directly north of the city — Tehran is built against them, and on a clear winter day they close off the whole northern horizon like this.
