The outline of Iran filled flat in terracotta on a bare cream sheet, with a single line of Persian running across the middle of the country in cream. Nothing else — no cities, no borders drawn inside, no title. The words are چو ایران نباشد تن من مباد: if there is no Iran, may my body not be.

It is the most quoted line in Persian, and every Iranian knows it as Ferdowsi's — though it does not appear in the critical editions of the Shahnameh, and scholars treat the couplet as later than the poem it is attached to. That has never mattered much to how it is used. The line has done a thousand years of work as shorthand for the thing it names, which is why it belongs written across the country rather than under it.
