Lyon, 21 June 1998. Estili headed Iran in front in the fortieth minute, Mahdavikia made it two late on, and Iran won 2–1 — the country's first ever World Cup victory, and against the United States, which is why it is still the most politically loaded ninety minutes in the tournament's history. Before kick-off the Iranian players handed white roses to the Americans and the two teams posed together for a single photograph. That is the part people outside Iran usually remember; the goal is the part Iranians remember.
