Tabriz has the largest covered bazaar in the world — something like five and a half kilometres of roofed lanes, listed by UNESCO in 2010. A hall like this one is a timcheh, a domed chamber given over to a single trade, and in Tabriz the grandest of them belong to the carpet dealers. The city was an Ilkhanid capital and later briefly a Safavid one, and it has been selling to travellers on this route for something like a thousand years.
