Fine Art Prints

Two estekan on a brass tray, the tea poured dark enough to read its color straight through the glass, sugar cubes at the saucer, lemon sliced beside them, and a stick of nabat crystallized onto its gold handle. Each glass carries a small painted cartouche of a Qajar shah in his tall black kolah — the ornament that turned an ordinary teahouse glass into something worth keeping.
Iran drank coffee until the nineteenth century. Tea arrived under the Qajars and took over completely, which is exactly why these glasses look the way they do — the tradition and its glassware grew up together. The waisted shape lets you hold it by the narrow middle while it is still too hot, and the sugar goes in your cheek rather than in the tea.
