Reza Khan rose through the Cossack Brigade, took power in the coup of 1921 and was crowned in 1925, ending the Qajar dynasty and founding the Pahlavi one. He reigned until 1941, when he abdicated under Anglo-Soviet pressure, and died in exile in Johannesburg three years later.
