Two scenes from Naser al-Din Shah's European tours, drawn in the style of the illustrated weeklies that covered them. In one, the Shah stands on a platform of the brand-new Eiffel Tower beside Gustave Eiffel, a spyglass in his hand while Eiffel points out across the rooftops toward Notre-Dame and the Seine. In the other, he steps down from his carriage in the courtyard at Windsor and reaches for the hand of Queen Victoria, who has come out in black to meet him, Grenadier Guards at attention along the wall.
Naser al-Din ruled Persia for nearly fifty years and was the first Persian monarch to travel through Europe, keeping a diary the whole way. He came home with photography, a taste for European dress, and a court that would never quite look the same. Both prints carry the toned paper, fine cross-hatching and small-caps caption of the period illustration.
