The Shir-o-Khorshid reduced to a single flat mark: a lion walking left with a curved shamshir raised in one paw, the sun rising in rayed segments from its back, and nothing else on the page but cream. The line is clean and modern, closer to a logo than to the crowded engraving the emblem usually carries.

The lion with the sun on its back appears on Iranian coinage as early as the twelfth century, with roots in the astrological image of the sun in Leo. The sword was added later, and by the nineteenth century the emblem had been standardized into the form drawn here. It stayed on the flag, on coins and on official seals until 1979.
