The outline of Iran drawn as a single gold line on deep navy, with the Lion and Sun set inside it. The lion walks left with a shamshir raised, the sun rises behind its shoulder, and the rays run outward until they meet the border of the country and stop. Nothing else is on the page.

The sun here has no face. Older versions of the emblem gave it one — khorshid khanoom, a human sun looking out over the lion's back — and the plain disc is the later, tidied form. One thing the symbol did that people tend not to know: from 1929 until 1980 the Red Lion and Sun was Iran's national relief society and one of the three emblems recognized by the international movement, alongside the Red Cross and the Red Crescent. For half a century it meant an ambulance as much as a throne.
