Production

The Iranian tricolour as flown until 1980: three equal bands of green, white and red with the Shir-o-Khorshid centered on the white. The lion walks left with a shamshir raised, the sun rising in rayed segments behind its shoulder, drawn in gold with a fine black outline and set on a plain hatched bar.

The tricolour was fixed in these proportions in 1907, under the Qajars and the constitutional movement, and standardized again in 1933. The Pahlavis inherited it rather than designed it. The Lion and Sun stayed on the flag, the coinage and the state seal until 1980. The conventional readings of the colors — green for growth, white for peace, red for courage — were attached to it later.
