The royal standard of the Achaemenid Empire, drawn as a flat graphic in gold on deep red. A shahbaz — the royal falcon — stands with wings thrown wide and a solar disc above its head, a gold orb gripped in each talon. The design is known from the banner carried behind Darius III in the Alexander Mosaic at Pompeii, and it has served ever since as shorthand for the empire of Cyrus, Darius and Xerxes.
