Damavand in late spring, snow still on the cone and the lower slopes gone green, seen across a field of wild poppies that runs right up to the foot of the frame. At 5,610 meters it is the highest peak in Iran and the highest volcano in Asia, and on a clear day you can see it from Tehran.
In the Shahnameh, Damavand is where Fereydun chains the tyrant Zahhak inside the mountain — which is why to Iranians it has never been only geography. The poppies carry their own weight too: shaghayegh, a flower Persian poetry gives to love, and that more recently stands for remembrance.
