Hossein Amanat designed the tower in 1966, when he was twenty-four, and it was completed in 1971. It opened as the Shahyad and was renamed Azadi — freedom — after 1979. The arch is a deliberate splice: a Sassanid catenary curve carrying a pointed Islamic vault above it.
