An Asiatic cheetah at full extension across the Fars plain, running toward the stepped tomb of Cyrus the Great at Pasargadae. Fewer than a few dozen of these cats survive in the wild, all of them in Iran — on the same ground the tomb has stood on for twenty-five centuries.
The composition is stripped to essentials: a low terracotta sun, a hard horizon, two silhouettes at opposite ends of the frame. The cheetah's shadow stretches back across the sand and does all the work of distance.
